Right now there are two ways to earn from Pearl mining: solo mining with your own hardware, or a compute package.
Why a pool matters
Solo mining pays the full block reward when your work finds a block — and nothing in between. Your expected earnings track your share of network compute, but the variance is severe if your share is small. You might mine for weeks and receive nothing, then get a full block reward at once.
Pools solve this by combining participants' compute and splitting rewards proportionally. Smaller, more frequent, more predictable payouts for the same expected total.

What about third-party pools?
If someone launches an unofficial Pearl pool, treat it with real caution. A pool takes custody of the mining process and, depending on its design, controls where rewards go before they reach you. That's a lot of trust to extend to an operator you can't audit.
Our position on external mining software applies here too: we don't endorse or amplify anything we haven't reviewed.
Specific things to be wary of:
- Any pool asking for your seed phrase. Mining needs a receiving address and nothing more. This is theft.
- Pools promising higher-than-protocol returns. Impossible. Rewards come from the protocol.
- Closed-source pool software. If you can't read it, you can't verify where your rewards go.
- Pools claiming to be official. We'll announce our pool on @prlnet and in Discord when it exists. Until then, anything claiming to be the official Pearl pool is not.
If you do use one, verify your rewards independently on the explorer against what the pool reports.
Building a pool yourself
Pearl is open source under the ISC licence and you don't need our permission to build on it. If you're working on pool infrastructure, we'd rather talk to you than read about it later — come to our Discord. Open-sourcing it is the single thing that would make it trustworthy to the people you want using it.
